V2G Project with Royal Mail and Smart Energy Solutions for Bus Depots
Challenge
The transportation sector faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. Q Energy was tasked with enabling bus depots and Royal Mail’s fleet to optimise energy use and create new revenue streams through smart energy management.
Solution
Q Energy developed the V2X dashboard to manage assets such as battery storage, heat pumps, solar installations, smart EV chargers, and V2G chargers. The solution includes:
- Behind-the-meter optimization: Utilising market volatility and non-commodity charges to optimise energy assets.
- DSO and DFS services: Leveraging distributed system operator and demand flexibility services to enhance energy trading.
Phase 1: Focused on bus depots, Q Energy analysed the potential of V2G services, establishing a model where bus depots with 100 buses equipped with 300 kWh batteries could provide 6MW of flexibility. This setup enables significant annual revenue per bus through energy exchanges with the grid.
Phase 2: Partnering with Royal Mail and Electric Green, Q Energy will manage a V2X platform for 40,000 light commercial vans using centralised charge points and wireless charging pads, starting in September 2023.
Results
- Energy Cost Reduction: Significant savings through optimised energy management and reduced dependency on grid power.
- New Revenue Streams: Access to new income sources through smart trading and asset optimisation.
Impact
- Environmental Benefits: Reduced carbon emissions and enhanced sustainability in fleet operations.
- Economic Gains: Substantial financial benefits from new revenue streams and cost savings.
- Innovative Technology Implementation: Pioneering the use of V2X and V2G technologies in large fleet operations, setting a benchmark for the industry.
