VIETPULSE – Vietnam Intelligent Energy Trading Platform

Challenge

Vietnam is undergoing significant energy transition challenges as it aims to achieve Net-Zero by 2050. The current electricity grid lacks the capacity to efficiently distribute renewable energy from generation sites to consumption areas, leading to project suspensions and reductions. The VIETPULSE project was initiated to address these challenges, improve access to low-cost renewable energy, and ensure energy security.

Solution

Led by Qbots Energy (UK) in collaboration with HTENATECH (Vietnam) and Eastern International University, VIETPULSE aimed to develop a low-cost renewable energy marketplace. Key components included:

  • Infrastructure Setup: Installation of solar panels and battery storage across multiple sites, including two EV charging hubs and a battery swapping station.
  • Smart Energy Management: Utilisation of AI and IoT to create a smart local energy trading and optimization platform. This included smart meters on nine building sites within a private network.
  • Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform: Development of a peer-to-peer platform utilising machine learning for predictive energy management.
  • Simulation and Modelling: Full system simulation at the EIU smart campus to optimise energy usage and trading based on real data.

Results

  • Successful Trials: The platform demonstrated successful energy trading and optimisation with 9 sites, achieving significant savings and operational efficiencies.
  • Enhanced Energy Storage: Installation of 60 kWh of energy storage and multiple generators and solar setups provided robust energy backup and generation capabilities.

Impact

  • Economic Benefits: The platform enabled up to 30% cheaper carbon-free electricity for customers and extra income of 20-30% for generators within the network.
  • Environmental Impact: Contributed to Vietnam’s goal of phasing out coal by the 2040s and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
  • Social Impact: Provided cheaper, green electric motorbike charging for low-income workers, enhancing the livelihoods within the industrial park.

The success of the VIETPULSE project has set the stage for further expansions, engaging with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to replicate local energy networks. Continued development and scaling of the platform are planned to include more industrial and residential areas, providing stable income streams and promoting widespread adoption of renewable energy solutions.
